Major

Circle-of-fifths major-key comparisons, enharmonic pairs, and beyond-the-standard-15 examples.

Major Scales

Below are the 15 standard major scales, organized by the circle of fifths and shown with note spellings, standard pronunciations, fixed-do, hybrid fixed-do, movable-do, and SingLet syllables.

Major scale formula

W-W-H-W-W-W-H

Every major scale follows the same whole-step and half-step pattern: whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half. The different key signatures simply preserve that interval shape from different starting notes.

Reading The Standard 15 Scales

Across the standard 15 major scales, traditional solfege uses a rich spread of vowels: Do, Di, Re, Ri, Mi, Fa, Fi, Sol, Si, La, Li, Ra, Me, Se, Le, and Te. Over time, musicians internalize these forms and they work beautifully, especially for relative-pitch development. SingLet parallels that singable CV logic, but with a simpler vowel ladder and more regular letter-linked forms. In theory, that should lower the amount of solmization training needed before a learner can sing note names fluently.

15 Major Scales

The standard major-key collection is easiest to read through the circle of fifths: one center key, a clockwise sharp side, and an anticlockwise flat side.

1. Center

C major sits at the center with no sharps and no flats.

4. Why The 3 Enharmonic Pairs Matter

Within the standard 15-key major-key system, three enharmonic overlaps appear: C♯ major / D♭ major, F♯ major / G♭ major, and B major / C♭ major. These are not important merely because the note names look different. Each pair preserves a different key signature, different spelled scale degrees, different leading-tone behavior, different modulation routes, and different harmonic-analysis cues. A reader hears the same sounding pitch, but reads B♯ in C♯ major differently from C natural in D♭ major because the notation carries tonal meaning. SingLet matters here because it keeps those spelling-aware distinctions singable instead of flattening them into one undifferentiated sound label.

5. Beyond The Standard 15 Keys

Other enharmonic spellings beyond the standard 15-key set are usually avoided in practice because they introduce high-tier accidentals such as double sharps. Traditional solmization either collapses those spellings or becomes too cumbersome, while SingLet still gives each note a compact, singable form.

F♯ major itself is still part of the standard set. The real break happens when the circle continues past it into keys such as G♯ major, D♯ major, and A♯ major.

This is where SingLet shows another advantage. In these keys, ordinary note names expand into long phrases like “F double sharp,” “C double sharp,” and “G double sharp,” while fixed-do inherits the same burden as “Fa double sharp” and “Do double sharp.” Movable-do stays singable and still preserves relative-pitch function, but it usually does not preserve the exact written spelling or accidental tier. SingLet keeps both advantages at once: F♯♯ becomes Faw, C♯♯ becomes Caw, and G♯♯ becomes Gaw, so the notation remains exact, compact, and easy to sing in sequence.

Beyond the standard 15 keys, the contrast becomes sharper. Traditional note names and fixed-do syllables lengthen exactly where the notation becomes more chromatic, while SingLet remains monosyllabic and regular. When solfege systems collapse double-accidental notes onto ordinary or single-accidental syllables, the singer may still recover relative pitch and scale-degree function from context, but no longer hears whether the notation says sharp or double sharp, flat or double flat, or which letter-name is intended. That weakens spelling-sensitive information such as chromatic direction, enharmonic distinction, and notated harmonic role. SingLet preserves those meanings while still staying short enough to sing fluently. The more accidentals the spelling carries, the more clearly the economy of SingLet stands out.
