Melodic Minor

Melodic minor is especially useful because the ascending and descending forms diverge while the spelling logic stays visible.

Melodic Minor

Melodic minor is especially useful here because the ascending and descending forms diverge. The tables show the ascending form for clarity, while the playback returns through the classical natural-minor descent.

Melodic minor formula

W-H-W-W-W-W-H

In these tables, melodic minor means the classical ascending form: whole, half, whole, whole, whole, whole, half. The descent returns through natural minor, so the page highlights the ascending spelling while the playback resolves by the classical descending form.

15 Melodic Minor Scales

These tables show the classical ascending melodic-minor form, which raises the sixth and seventh degrees. The playback returns through the natural-minor form on the way down.

1. Center

A melodic minor raises F to F♯ and G to G♯ on the way up, then returns through natural minor on the way down.

5. Beyond The Standard 15 Keys

Melodic minor pushes the outer minor keys even further because the ascending form raises both the sixth and seventh degrees. The signatures stay standard, but the upper scale degrees now show a more advanced spelling landscape.

G♯ melodic minor adds E♯ and F♯♯, D♯ melodic minor adds B♯ and C♯♯, and A♭ melodic minor adds F natural and G natural on the ascent before descending through natural minor again.

These examples show how quickly conventional note naming becomes bulky once the upper degrees are altered in sequence. SingLet keeps those spellings compact enough to sing while still preserving whether the notation says sharp, double sharp, flat, or natural.

Because the playback returns through natural minor on the descent, the learner can also hear that melodic minor is not simply a renamed major fragment. The altered ascent and the natural-minor descent remain distinct in both notation and SingLet labeling.
